Points of View is a series of archival inkjet
prints. These photobased prints are a departure for me from
my usual mediums of painting on panel and printmaking. This
departure is a result of a shift from using photography
as source material for use in other mediums to recognizing
that a portion of my photographic work demanded to be explored
in its own right. Points of View is a result of this shift.
I have sought out the natural world through my camera lens
for more than 20 years, taking thousands of photographs
during that time. It has been part of my practice as an
artist to use some of these photographs (particularly those
of eroding structures) to begin the development of each
new series of paintings and body of work.
In recent years I have taken an increasing number of photographs
in some of Canada’s many remote areas in Ontario and
British Columbia. The images from these areas, where man’s
impact is kept at bay and the powerful forces of nature
prevail, form the basis for Points of View.
The series explores my encounters with the landscape through
juxtaposed pairs of panoramic photographs. Each work consists
of a pair of images that have been selected to encourage
a dialogue between them.
For the past 8 years I have been part “The Gibson
Gang”, which consists of 7 artists - Yael Brotman,
Karen Curry, Michael Earle, Brian Hoxha, Brian Kelley, Liz
Parkinson and Snaige Sileika. Many of the Ontario photographs
have been taken during our yearly trips
During the Field Trip exhibition in September 2003 curator
Carla Garnet said, “For the past 10 years The Gibson
Gang has gone on an annual canoe trip. The field trips began
on the Gibson River and have extended into the present --
with variations on locations and modes of travel and shelter.
All members of the gang had originally connected as printmakers
at Open Studio through the shared discovery of
each individuals’ love of working plein air,
camping and the Canadian North. Since then, these seven
hermitic personalities put aside one week, each year, to
camp, canoe, hike, swim, eat, drink, read, sketch and photograph
as a way of recording the spectacular experience of the
Shield.”
